About
What is sleep apnea?
The adventures of Mr Pickwick (Charles Dickens) could let people think or laugh. Today sleep apnea is something more frequent than many believe and it doesn't make even smile anymore. The sleeper stops breathing, dozens of times per hour, he puts his health at risk - and sometimes also the health of his partner who as a consequence can't have a good sleep. Those respiratory stops last each over 10 seconds and may occasionally longer than one minute. During apnea, the level of carbon dioxide in the blood increases, the brain is left with much less oxygen. Apneas are responsible for micro arousals (extremely short non conscious awakenings, which prevent from staying in or getting into deep stage sleep), they are causing numerous troubles. On the long term, they associate to other serious diseases and increase their impact.
Apneas can well be at the origin of traffic accidents and work injuries.
Sleep apnea is a serious condition; it must absolutely be treated, rapidly.
